Scheduling Sugar Land Eye Exams With Mann Eye Institute

Comprehensive eye exams are extremely important for your overall eye health and preservation of your sight. It is common for many people to not know what to expect at an eye exam, and that’s OK. The eye doctors at Mann Eye Institute know exactly what to do and will guide you through the process. You may need to have your eyes dilated during your eye exam. This will depend on the reason for your exam, your age, your overall health and your risk of eye diseases.

During a dilated eye exam, special eye drops will be used to widen your pupils, allowing more light to enter your eyes. This provides your eye doctor with a clearer and more comprehensive view of the inside and back of your eyes, enabling them to thoroughly assess your eye health. Dilation can help with diagnosis of dangerous eye diseases before they become harmful to your vision.

How to Prepare for your

Eye Exam in Sugar land

  • Remove eye makeup prior to your eye exam
  • Be sure to bring your medical health and eye insurance information
  • New patients are encouraged to print and fill out medical forms
  • Be prepared to discuss any health problems and/or allergies
  • What are your previous eye diseases?
  • Family history of eye disease (This is important for eye diseases like glaucoma)
  • Prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking
  • List of sports/hobbies in which you participate
  • For new patients, bring all glasses and contact lenses

Does Mann Eye Institute Perform Child Eye Exams?

Some experts estimate that approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of pre-school aged kids and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), all children should have their eyes examined at 6 months of age, at age 3 and again at the start of school. Young children without vision problems or risk factors for eye or vision problems should then continue to have their eyes examined at least every two years throughout school.

What Do Our Patients Say?

What is the Difference Between an Optometrist and Ophthalmologist?

At Mann Eye Institute, our team of eye care professionals includes both optometrists and ophthalmologists. It is normal to be confused as to how these types of eye doctors differ. To better understand the differences between optometrists and ophthalmologists, you can think of optometrists as primary eye care providers and ophthalmologists as specialized eye surgeons.

The Front Line of Care for

Your Total Eye Health

Optometrists work at the primary care level and often perform diagnosis and preparation for treatment planning. It is common for Optometrists to diagnose nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Then, they can determine if glasses or contact lenses, or perhaps some type of laser vision correction, will help provide you with clear vision. It is also common for optometrists to treat conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dry eye syndrome and can even diagnose glaucoma.

Optometrists need a Doctor of Optometry degree, which requires the completion of a four-year program at an accredited optometry school, preceded by at least three years of pre-optometric study (biology, chemistry, physics, english, mathematics) at an accredited college or university.

What Are Common Tasks Performed by Optometrists?

  • They routinely perform eye exams and vision testing
  • They very frequently prescribe and dispense glasses and contact lenses
  • Analyze and detect certain eye abnormalities
  • They also very often prescribe medications for certain eye diseases
  • Sometimes they perform vision therapy and also work with myopia management
  • Evaluate secondary eye conditions associated with systemic diseases
  • They often perform contact lens exams and fittings

Let’s Discuss Ophthalmologists Next

Ophthalmologists are medical eye doctors who perform eye surgery and can often work in conjunction with Optometrists. Ophthalmologists perform a wide variety if eye surgery including cornea surgery, corneal transplants, LASIK eye surgery, cataract surgery, retina surgery, glaucoma surgery, eyelid surgery and more. Our Sugar Land eye care patients are often referred to our ophthalmologists by optometrists when a surgical need arises or if there’s concern about a potential eye disease or condition present.

If you are seeing an Ophthalmologist at our Sugar Land eye care location, you can rest assured you are seeing an expert on all things eye care related. Our Sugar Land Ophthalmologists treat with both non-surgical and surgical methods, but not all ophthalmologists are the same. Ophthalmologists often specialize in one or more specific areas of eye care. There are numerous subspecialties within ophthalmology, and most ophthalmologists focus their expertise on a select few. For instance, the skill set of a LASIK eye surgeon differs significantly from that of a retina specialist, as each subspecialty requires unique knowledge and training.

Rigorous Ophthalmology Training

The Ophthalmology education path is very involved and includes 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 4-5 years of postgraduate training, often involving residency, internship and fellowship training.
