Cataract Surgery

During cataract surgery, your surgeon will make a tiny incision in your eye to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. The new lens can’t be seen or felt and stays permanently inside the eye.

The incision is so small that stitches are not required. It will heal completely by itself.

Although you should plan to be with us for a few hours on the day of your surgery to allow for pre- and post-op monitoring, the procedure itself takes just a few minutes.

Recovery time is remarkably fast, thanks to advances in technology. Many patients ask us when they can return to work, and the answer is, when you feel comfortable doing so. But please wait one to two weeks before resuming wearing any eye makeup.

Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours of their procedure, although strenuous physical activity is discouraged for two weeks. The eye may take several weeks to heal completely – your surgeon will guide you through the postoperative process for the best results.

The short answer to that question is no. Once removed, cataracts can never come back. That said, sometimes, the body can develop scar tissue, sometimes called a secondary cataract, after surgery that can affect vision. This is a fairly common occurrence.

If you are among the people who develop this condition, it is easily addressed in a quick, two-minute procedure called a Yag Capsulotomy, performed right here in the office. You can drive yourself to and from this easy appointment.

Although the need for this procedure is common and is not related to the success of your cataract surgery outcome, it does not happen to everyone.
