What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that occurs as we age. This progressive clouding blocks the lens from being able to focus light on the retina.

Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness among older adults in the United States. Today, cataracts affect more than 25 million Americans aged 40 and older, and more than half of all Americans will have cataracts by the time they are 80 years old.*

What are the symptoms of Cataracts?

Because cataracts typically develop very slowly, most people don’t realize the lens in the eye is affected until their vision becomes dull or blurry. Common symptoms include:

If you suffer from any of the symptoms above, schedule an appointment with one of our experienced cataract specialists, so we can evaluate your eyes, determine whether you have cataracts and suggest an appropriate treatment option to restore your vision.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataracts cannot be treated with medication, diet or eye drops, and they will not heal on their own. Cataracts must be surgically removed to restore clear vision. Once cataracts are present, your vision will continue to worsen over time without cataract surgery.

And how can you know when it’s time to have cataract surgery? Great question. We like to tell patients that when symptoms begin to negatively affect their life (i.e. driving confidently, reading, watching TV), it’s time to see one of our cataract specialists and start the conversation about cataract surgery. Don’t waste your prime years with cloudy vision!
