Amir Mohsenin, MD, PhD specializes in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the retina and vitreous including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, inherited retinal diseases, retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and retinal vascular disease.
Dr. Mohsenin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was awarded a full scholarship to enroll in the competitive dual degree MD/PhD program at UTHealth’s McGovern Medical School. After graduation, he was accepted to the Yale University School of Medicine for his ophthalmology residency. At Yale, he received the Marvin L. Sears Award for clinical and surgical excellence in ophthalmology.
Dr. Mohsenin went on to complete a 2-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which has been ranked #1 by US News & World Report for more than a decade.
Dr. Mohsenin previously served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at UT Health where he trained numerous medical students and ophthalmology residents and received the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award in 2019. In addition to taking care of patients while at UT Health, Dr. Mohsenin was awarded a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop new therapies for macular degeneration.
Dr. Mohsenin is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has authored numerous scientific articles, abstracts and book chapters (see Dr. Mohsenin’s CV here for a full list). He has also taught a course at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting.
When Dr. Mohsenin isn’t seeing patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, playing tennis and attending his son’s chess tournaments. He is also fluent in Farsi.
Dr. Mohsenin has been invited to discuss a number of eye-related topics on a plethora of local and national radio stations, television stations and publications.
