Over the years at Mann Eye Institute, we’ve helped tens of thousands of people enjoy improved vision without the hassles of glasses and contacts with our life-changing Advanced LASIK procedures. And in all those years, we’ve heard many of the same concerns.
So, as we step into a new year, we’d like to pause and take a moment to address some common concerns surrounding LASIK.
LASIK for the Nervous Nelly
Are you someone who errs on the side of caution? Maybe a bit risk-averse? A look-before-you-leap kind of person? You’re not alone!
Many people cite fear as the biggest hurdle they have to get over when deciding about LASIK. We understand. After all, you only have one set of eyes and you need them to work well for a lifetime, right?
But please allow us to put your mind at ease. LASIK is a safe and effective procedure with an impressive success rate. At our no-risk, no-obligation FREE consultations, we are happy to answer all your questions and address all your concerns.
The top three questions we hear from people who are nervous about LASIK:
Does it hurt?
Most of our patients describe the sensation during LASIK as a slight pressure. Before your procedure begins, your Mann Eye Institute surgeon will apply numbing drops (no injections, we promise!). You may also be given oral relaxation medication beforehand. Most of our patients are back to their regular routines the very next day!
What if I accidentally blink during my procedure?
Another common concern. But don’t worry, we have you covered on this one, too. The numbing drops help take away the urge to blink and any blinking is prevented by an instrument called a lid speculum, which gently holds back your upper and lower eyelids. It will be put into place after your numbing drops take effect.
What are the risks associated with LASIK?
As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks. But please know that LASIK complications are extremely rare. During your free screening, our Mann Eye Institute counseling team will explain any risks associated with your procedure, so you can confidently make an informed decision.
LASIK for the Penny Pincher
All the savers, raise your hands! You know who you are. The ones with savings accounts, retirement plans and sometimes even money to spare at the end of the month.
For people who are apprehensive about the price tag associated with LASIK, we see you! And we understand your concern. Eye surgery is an investment…but it’s an investment in yourself and one that offers you the opportunity to enjoy visual freedom without the hassles and restrictions of glasses and contacts.
In all our years of serving Texans, we’ve yet to meet someone who regrets investing in themselves with life-changing LASIK. In fact, most people say their only regret is that they waited so long before deciding to have it.
Top questions surrounding the cost of LASIK:
Is LASIK covered by insurance?
Because LASIK is considered elective surgery, most insurance companies don’t cover the procedure. But the majority of vision plans offer some type of discount and some even offer a discount on top of a current promotion. If you’re not sure, just come see us! Our financing team is more than happy to review your employer’s insurance policy to see if a portion of your procedure may be covered or if there is a discount available.
Can I Afford LASIK?
On average, people who finance their procedure with Mann Eye are paying around the same amount they would spend on buying a cup of coffee every day (and not the crazy expensive coffee either!). And thanks to affordable financing options, most people can comfortably afford LASIK. We love to work with our patients to establish a payment plan to fit nearly any budget!
Can I Use my FSA?
Yes! How great is that?! If you have a flex spending account, you can use those funds for tax-free savings toward your procedure. FSA dollars don’t carry over from year to year, so why not use them before you lose them?

And finally…
LASIK for the Skeptic
Are you someone who questions everything? Tends to think if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is? Hey, we get it. We understand you might be a bit suspicious about whether or not LASIK is everything it’s cracked up to be.
Top questions from the skeptical crowd:
Does LASIK “fade” over time?
This is a common misconception, but no, LASIK doesn’t fade or wear off. The procedure creates a permanent change to the cornea, so the treatment will not fade over time. However as your eyes age, vision problems that are unrelated to the corneal surface can still occur, namely presbyopia (over-40 vision) and cataracts. When we assess your vision at your consultation, we will determine which of our many advanced vision-correcting procedures is right for you.
Does it Really Matter Where I Have My LASIK Done?
It does. Not all LASIK is the same and not all eye surgeons are the same. At Mann Eye, we have the most advanced technology in the hands of some of the most experienced eye surgeons in the nation. We have been Texans’ trusted LASIK leaders since day one.
